Project description

The project will integrate the preservation of existing structures, extensions, renovations and reuse, with a focus on creating high-quality workplaces and street-facing functions. The initiative will particularly address the relationship between climate-friendly construction, sustainable urban development, and the preservation and transformation of heritage buildings. Close collaboration with the Directorate for Cultural Heritage is desired, especially concerning their ongoing work on greenhouse gas strategies related to conservation.

The goal for this project is to provide practical examples and valuable knowledge transferable to similar efforts, demonstrating how to best combine the reuse of existing buildings with new structures in urban development areas.

The project will aim to implement FutureBuilt ZERO to the extent practically possible, learning from potential challenges in balancing heritage preservation with modern environmental goals. Special attention will be given to a circular material strategy, focusing on reusable materials and designs that facilitate future reuse.

An innovative use of rooftop spaces will be a focal point, exploring combinations of urban farming, biodiversity, circular water and stormwater strategies, energy production, and recreational areas. A clear ambition is to map out synergies and multi-use potential for the limited space on rooftops in dense urban environments.

Strategies will also be developed to ensure that the lower levels of the building, potentially combined with the rooftop areas, contribute positively to the local community. This includes exploring possibilities for providing facilities and spaces for non-profits and associations, and partnering with local actors engaged in social sustainability, cultural initiatives or local history.
