Tåsenhjemmet nursing home

2024.07.24 11:24

The nursing home is a Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) built in cross-laminated timber. By redeveloping most of the existing building´s footprint, the impact on the site including several large trees is minimised.

Project description

Tåsenhjemmet is a modern nursing home with 130 resident rooms, a day centre, and generous outdoor areas.

Located in a neighbourhood dominated by wooden single-family homes, the project aims to blend naturally into its surroundings and remain open and inviting to local residents. Creating outdoor spaces that the community can enjoy has been a key ambition, including a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, and a market square with a café.

The building is constructed in solid wood, and parts of the roof will be covered with solar panels to support local energy production. Its façades feature varied heights and materials to break up the mass of the structure, helping it fit naturally into the surrounding low-rise neighbourhood. The overall height is comparable to the existing care home on the site.

Car traffic and deliveries are concentrated on the western side of the property, separated from pedestrians and cyclists to ensure safe and clear access routes.

The construction process itself has largely been carried out using emission-free machinery.

To minimise environmental impact, the new building is placed on the footprint of the existing structure. Protecting biodiversity has guided the project from the start. Much of the existing vegetation is preserved, and the outdoor areas are shaped around it. The plans also include the planting of hvitmure,  drymocallis rupestris, a rare local herb on the brink of extinction. In addition, a sensory garden will be established, together with several green roofs and rain gardens that manage surface run-off.

The plans also include the planting of hvitmure,  drymocallis rupestris, a rare local herb on the brink of extinction.

Leaving felled trees to decompose on site helps preserve their ecological value, providing vital habitat for insects, fungi and mosses.
